The Neurotization Process: Precision Microsurgery
Neurotization is performed using microsurgical instruments and magnification, which enable the surgeon to visualize and manipulate very small nerves. During reconstruction, sensory nerves in the chest wall (most often from the intercostal nerves) are carefully identified, along with those in the transferred tissue. These nerves are then connected using microsurgical techniques to facilitate healing and growth. Over time, sensation gradually returns to the reconstructed breast.
